Method - Socratic Discussion

The essence of 'Socratic discussion' lies in the adoption of a questioning style, central to the Socratic method, where one assumes a position of ignorance, often referred to as 'Socratic ignorance': "I do not think I know what I do not know". By consciously acknowledging one's lack of knowledge, the dialogue becomes a journey of mutual exploration rather than a mere exchange of assertions. This approach leads to deeper analytical and critical thinking, as each answer or partial understanding opens new avenues of inquiry. The beauty of the Socratic method lies in its ability to guide participants to profound realms of thought, where wisdom is not just about having answers, but about constantly questioning and seeking.

The irony, often termed 'Socratic irony,' emerges from this process. It is the realization that those who engage in such questioning, though appearing less knowledgeable, actually gain deeper wisdom and understanding than those who presume knowledge without question. This irony underscores a fundamental Socratic principle: true wisdom comes from recognizing one's own ignorance and perpetually seeking to overcome it. Thus, in Socratic discussions, wisdom is not measured by the accumulation of facts, but by the depth of understanding and the willingness to continuously explore and question.

And therefore, I conjecture that - regarding the elusive and intangible nature of knowledge:

• If you truly and fundamentally understand the question, then you already know the answer.....  the answer is inherently 'known' to you.

  • This is because a deep understanding of the question encompasses not only its surface level but also the underlying assumptions, implications, and the context in which it exists. Such an understanding bridges the gap between inquiry and insight, revealing the answer as an intrinsic part of the question itself.

• 'Knowledge' is infinite.. and presents the appearance of infinitely receding.

  • Knowledge, though perceived as a solid ground, is more akin to a mirage, always expanding beyond reach and defying finality​, and is pressed onward by wisdom.
